Description

Thermal barrier coating (TBC) has been widely applied to jet engine parts as the protection layer for underneath metal working at high temperature. The ceramic based coating, however will suffer from harsh environment such as hot air and sands can lead to undesired coating spallation and crack failure. This paper introduced a new laser process to improve the TBC resistance to spallation and thermal strain tolerance. Ultrafast laser system  has been used to slot micro-scale grooves on coating surface with optimized geometry and function property. Coating life extension is demonstrated with laser slotted coupon and parameter study. Pros and cons of laser slotting compared with other machining methods is analyzed as well.
